Photokina Leica Announcements
The Leica M
Most versatile rangefinder camera yet includes high performance sensor and processing technology, three focusing options including Live View, Full HD video recording and compatibility with Leica R-Lenses
Leica Camera AG has announced a groundbreaking milestone in the history of the Leica rangefinder system: the Leica M. As the first camera to implement a newly designed and constructed CMOS image sensor, and to feature additional focusing methods and functions such as Live View and Full HD video capability, this is the most versatile model ever in the history of the Leica rangefinder camera, and sets entirely new standards.
The Leica M is the first in a long line of Leica rangefinder cameras to feature a completely new development in sensor technology: the Leica Max CMOS image sensor. This 24 megapixel, full 35mm format sensor was designed and constructed in collaboration with CMOSIS specifically for the camera and its use with Leica M- and R-Lenses. This new development successfully transfers the characteristic advantages of CCD sensors, such as natural and brilliant colour rendition and impressive reproduction of detail, to a CMOS sensor.
The Leica M offers a multitude of new features. The first of these are Live View and Live View Focus, where image composition can take place in real time with the view of the subject through the lens. The sharpness, exposure and colour content of images can be precisely assessed on the camera's large, 3", high-resolution 920,000 pixel screen. The glass covering plate of the monitor screen is manufactured from particularly tough and scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass.
Thanks to the Live View function, photographers now have access to entirely new opportunities that, in combination with the outstanding performance of Leica M- and R-Lenses, go far beyond the classic capabilities of rangefinder photography. This applies particularly in macro and telephoto photography, and allows even more discreet shooting. In combination with M- and R-Lenses, the camera's new 1080p Full HD video mode also opens up completely new possibilities
The Leica M in black paint or silver chrome finish is scheduled to be available in the UK at a suggested retail price of £5,100 inc VAT from early 2013

Together with the new Leica M and Leica M Monochrom – the world's first digital black and white camera in 35mm format – the Leica M-E joins the latest digital generation of Leica M cameras, now comprising three rangefinder models. Offering rangefinder technology perfected by Leica over decades, the Leica M-E represents the essence of rangefinder photography. Concentrating on the essential photographic functions and renowned dependability for all typical 'M' fields of use, the Leica M-E makes an ideal entry-level model for photographers wishing to experience the fascination of M-Photography in its purest form.
Featuring a proven, high-resolution, 18 MP CCD sensor in full 35 mm format, the Leica M-E offers exceptional image quality combined with the distinct advantages of rangefinder photography, and a minimal, discreet design in an unobtrusive anthracite grey paint finish. The application of an attractive new leather-style trim, which also provides enhanced grip for steadier shooting, ideally complements the camera's classic design.
The Leica M-E in anthracite grey paint finish is scheduled to be available in the UK at a suggested retail price of £3,900 inc VAT from September 2012

New Leica S camera body and lenses
A logical development of the successful Leica S2, the new Leica S offers a further increase in image quality and sensor sensitivity, predictive autofocus, higher speed and enhanced handling. Numerous additional features, some of them unique, contribute to an improved professional workflow. In addition to the new camera body, three new lenses have been added to the S-System portfolio, significantly expanding the capabilities of the system: the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. super-wide, the Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. and the Leica TS-APO-Elmar-S 120 mm f/5.6 ASPH. tilt/shift lens
One of the most notable innovations in the Leica S is its new image and sensor board. The extended sensitivity range the lower basic ISO setting of 100 allows longer working at maximum aperture in extremely bright conditions, while the maximum sensitivity of ISO 1600 enables users to capture noise-free images, even under difficult lighting conditions. The doubling of the buffer memory to 2 GB and support of transfer rates up to 166 MB/s enables photographers to shoot continuous sequences of up to 32 consecutive images in RAW format – at full resolution of 37.5 MP. The number of images that can be captured consecutively in JPG format is only limited by the capacity of the memory card used. The upgraded autofocus module increases the speed, the GPS system and levelling aid makes for precision and uncomplicated workflows.
The Leica S is scheduled to be available in the UK at a suggested retail price of £16,000 inc VAT from December 2012

The latest news announced by Leica Camera AG about the company’s move to Leitz Park.

Ground-breaking ceremony for new Leica Camera AG headquarters in Wetzlar
25 April 2012: The starting shot has now been fired for the relocation of Leica Camera AG from Solms to the new headquarters at the Leitz Park in Wetzlar. Today, the first breaking of the ground for the new Schanzenfeld site in Wetzlar was celebrated by the majority shareholder of the company ACM Projektentwicklung GmbH from Salzburg, the board of Leica Camera AG and the developers, Leitz-Park GmbH, in the presence of Volker Bouffier (CDU), Prime Minister of the state of Hesse, representatives of the media and invited guests.
The plans prepared by the architects, Gruber + Kleine-Kraneburg, foresee the completion of the ultra-modern new location for the production, administration and customer care divisions of Leica Camera AG in November 2013, with a projected ground-plan area of around 27,000 m2. The new site, built in accordance with the latest energy-efficiency standards, will then be a new home to around 600 Leica employees. Openly visible production areas, a Leica Museum, a Leica Galerie, a Leica Store, a photo studio and a restaurant expand the spectrum of attractive features for visitors, friends of Leica and anyone fascinated by photography. A central plaza will create a binding element between the new headquarters of Leica Camera AG and the existing facilities occupied by Weller Feinwerktechnik GmbH and ViaOptic GmbH on the Leitz Park site. The overall investment volume for the Leitz Park construction project amounts to 55 million euros.
In the words of Volker Bouffier, Prime Minister of the state of Hesse, ‘Leica Camera AG is a traditional Hessian company with a worldwide reputation for excellence. We can be proud that a company so important in the optical industry maintains its manufacturing and administrative facilities in our state. With the new company headquarters in Wetzlar, Leica remains loyal to its Hessian origins. I am certain that the company’s employees will ensure that Leica will continue to be an internationally renowned name that is always equated with the highest quality.’
Dr Andreas Kaufmann from ACM Projektentwicklung GmbH emphasised the signal sent out to the world for the ‘Optical City’ of Wetzlar by the new headquarters project: ‘The Leitz Camera set out from here to conquer the world and revolutionise photography almost exactly 100 years ago. Now that Leica Camera AG is returning to its birthplace, we are confirming the utmost importance the city possesses for the entire optical industry segment in Germany. Leica Camera AG is returning to Wetzlar, to a new home that will be open to visitors and photography enthusiasts and will offer a unique experience with valuable insights into the past, present and future of photography.’
Alfred Schopf, chairman of the Executive Board at Leica Camera AG: ‘The production and administrative buildings in the development are being built to the latest environmental and energy-efficiency standards and will allow us to rapidly satisfy the enormous demand for Leica products without the delays we have sometimes suffered in the past. Our colleagues will enjoy a modern and attractive working environment that motivates, promotes creativity and enables us to provide Leica’s familiar technical perfection, satisfying the most stringent quality demands. The new headquarters development is a further milestone in the history of our company that benefits not only us, but also our customers and visitors.’
